So, the other day I was doing some small group personal training with The Three
Musketeers, three super strong Korean lady friends,
outdoors, in their back yard, and at the end of the
workout one of them
says to me, "Hey Curtis, we haven't been sore in
our
abs for a longtime. Why is that?"
Then her friend gets this serious look of concern,
eyes slightly bulging
out of her head, covers her friend's mouth with her
hand, grinning slightly, and says something in
hushed tones - and in KOREAN. Not only did
she
feel the need to whisper, she also felt the need to
completely switch languages for some reason.
I guess she didn’t want me to know what she was
talking about.
Then they all of sudden agree that, they actually
HAVE been sore. And there is consensus that
it’s
OKAY. They don’t mind not being sore. Like I was
going to throw the whole abdominal training tool kit I
have at them, all at once, just to make them
sore.
I found that kind of funny.
So, my question is, why do many people think
that they
need to feel soreness in their abs to get results?
Did you know that the 6-pack is actually an 8-
pack?
Did you know that EVERYONE has these muscles?
And did you know that the 8-pack is actually
ONE
muscle and that they look like separate muscles
because of a vertical and horizontal tendinous
inscriptions that run across the muscle.
Well, with functional training, the training philosophy
focuses on training the entire body with an emphasis
on the middle and deep lying musculature. It focuses
on your CORE muscles. It trains movements, not
individual muscles.
It does not focus on training the six-pack.
Why is this important? Because a chain is only as
strong as the weakest link. You could have the
strongest chest press, the best bench, and a six-
pack. On the outside you could look like the pinnacle
of fitness and strength. The story on the inside could
be dramatically different, however.
The weakest link in the chain determines the
maximum power output that your body can produce.
So if you don’t have a strong core you could be
setting yourself up for failure and injury.
The best way to make sure you stay healthy and
make your 6-pack? visible is with a
comprehensive
nutrition and functional exercise program that is
periodized, with cycle training.
You have a greater metabolic expenditure
when you
perform multi-joint compound movements than when
you perform isolation type body building
movements.
This increases the number of calories you burn all
day long.
This improves hormonal response, which increases
growth hormone release.
This ALL provides the stimulus necessary to build
more muscle and burn fat.
Something else to remember is that the mighty 6-
pack isn’t the most important muscle in your body.
You can do all of the sit-ups, crunches, and ab
exercises in the world. They will not make the abs
visible. What makes the abs visible is having low
body fat.
Also, there is no best ab-exercise. There is no one
best food to eat. There really isn’t a best workout.
What really matters is the long term PROGRAM.
If you want your six-pack? to be visible, if you want
lower body fat, you must do something differently.
You must use a system built upon the concept of
adaptation, progression, and periodization.
When you follow a program that utilizes these
principles and keep your goal clearly in mind; then
your success is AUTOMATIC.
It isn’t painful; it just requires a shift in your daily
habit patterns.
If you want to make the shift and need help doing it,
I can help you. EVERYONE I choose to work with
succeeds with
my system of training. If you have questions
about
your current program or want to start a new one let
me
know.
