Atlanta, GA – In response to the airing
of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Free Hugs founder Jason Hunter issued this statement to answer a flood of inquiries he received
about the connection between his company and the Free Hugger featured on the nationally syndicated talk show: Since
2001, we have been spreading the message of "Free Hugs". That year, this company was born, inspired by the death of my dear
mother Josephine Hunter and her mission to let every single person she met feel significant and loved. Over the past five
years, we have touched many lives all over the world through our commitment to community, through the sale of our t-shirts
and more importantly, through our FREE HUGS.
It has come to my attention that Juan Mann, a young man in Australia, started his own Free Hugs
campaign two years ago, beginning exactly as I did with a hand drawn sign and a will to share hope and love. Many of you have
asked me about his video on YouTube and appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. We want to make it clear that we are not affiliated
with Juan Mann. We are truly honored that we may have inspired others to start a campaign of their own.
I know that
if we all continue to share the Free Hugs message, we will see positive social changes in the world sooner than we think.
And if Oprah is listening right here in America, then certainly our message will continue to be heard around the world. Thanks
again for all of your continued support.
